Evelyn Lowen blogger: Race, Ethnicity, Culture or Religion. Hijab wearing

Most Muslim women wear a hijab, which is a head covering worn in public. The hijab is described as a blessing and a burden. Many women who wear the hijab believe that they represent their faith based on the first impression that they give off. As described in Islam's sacred book, men and women should practice modesty. The hijab is a way for women to dress modestly and also it offers them protection. There is a greater degree of freedom of choice in the Western Islamic countries. A societal issue related to wearing a hijab is the prejudice and stereotypes that come along with it. A common example of a stereotype is that women wearing a hijab are forced into it or are extremely timid. I believe that if wearing a hijab makes a women feel empowered in their religion or positive about themselves, they should absolutely wear one. Prior to coming to Morocco, I had not seen many people who wore a hijab. I now have a better understanding of what it means to be wearing a hijab.

  1. Hi Evelyn,

Thank you for sharing your thoughtful reflection! It's important to recognize that the hijab, like many expressions of faith, holds deeply personal and empowering meaning for many women, despite the stereotypes they may face. Your experience in Morocco clearly helped broaden your understanding, and it's great to see that perspective shift through direct exposure and openness.
