Who Am I? Think Again. Exploring Authentic Identities

This video is part of the TED Talks series. TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) is a nonprofit devoted to disseminating "ideas worth spreading." I thought the idea of creating authentic identity through failed imitation was a great theme to begin the course as well as the blog. My hope is that you will step outside of the status quo and use your creative nature to complete the assignments and explore identity in a global context throughout this semester. What are your thoughts about Hetain Patel's presentation?

Clara Forehand: Race, Ethnicity, Culture, or Religion - Single Mothers

During the tour of Casablanca, our tour guide briefly mentioned how single mothers in Morocco face significant exclusion and ostracization when she explained the Princess of Morocco’s charity work. I know that single mothers also face certain stigmas in the United States, but usually women who become single mothers have at least some support from family or community. However, due to the culture in Morocco, single mothers are a substantial break in gender norms and challenge the existing social order; this leads to their economic and social exclusion, which can be passed on to their children (Berwick, 2017). Yet in recent decades, more charity groups have been established in Morocco to help these mothers, such as Association Solidarité Féminine (ASF) and International Support Network of Alienated Families (ISNAF), both of which provide legal and psychological support. Sexual Orientation or Gender Roles - Lucia Gravel

In comparing sexual orientation in Morocco and the United States, there is a huge difference in the level of social acceptance and legal recognition of LGBTQ+ people. In the United States, discrimination definitely still exists, but there are legal protections in place including the right to marry, adopt, and live openly. In Morocco, however, homosexuality is criminalized, which can lead to imprisonment. Public expression of queer identity is not only socially ‘incorrect’ but also legally dangerous.      As someone who identifies as LGBTQ+, this was a constant consideration of mine as we traveled through the country. I thought about how difficult it must be to always have to hide such a fundamental part of yourself to stay safe. Not being able to have queer communities or celebrate love openly is something I do not think I could live with.
