Blog 1: race, ethnicity, culture

 The identity I am choosing that is different from my own is that of the Islamic religion. The Islamic religion is the dominant religion of Morocco. It is a monotheistic religion that believes in a god called Allah who is the creator, sustainer, and judge. This religion is a holistic religion that “connects every aspect of life with a divine purpose,” (super Muslim). Some of the major pillars of this religion include faith, prayer, charity, and fasting. Some practices of the Islamic faith include women wearing hijabs, praying 5 times a day, and completing fasting while the sun is up during Ramadan. With these practices and faith can come some issues with society. I think the most potent issue is Islamophobia. Because Muslims are often very open and outwardly express their faith through things like their clothes, eating practices, or daily prayer, it can become easy for them to stick out and seem different when they are in the minority. Because of this people often immediately judge and think differently of those following the Islamic faith. 


Editorial: Since being in Morocco I have observed the vast amounts of people who are very dedicated to the Islamic faith. Many women are covering their entire bodies even though it’s 70 degrees outside. I’ve also heard the call to prayers and seen majority of the shops close down during it to allow the owners to go pray. I think their dedication to faith is very honorable and is something I hope to reflect with my own personal faith. I have also noticed that being a non Muslim in this country has put me in the minority, however a majority of the people here do not seem to bat an eye at that. A key moment for me was when we left the blueberry farm and a group of Muslim women were so happy to see us and were all waving and blowing kisses to us. It made me realize the importance of not judging people based off of their appearance. If Muslim people in their own country don’t do it to us there’s no reason we should do it to them in a place especially like America.

  Motherhood & Morocco All life comes from women. This is a fact we all know and see the evidence of daily, yet it is also a fact we choose to ignore or employ only when it is of convenience to society. Women are the backbone, the lifeblood, the prana, and the chi of all life. As we endure heartbreak, trauma, and illness, we call out for our mothers. As men die on battlefields and in army hospitals, they yearn for a touch of their mother. Sexual Orientation or Gender Roles - Markeila Howard

  During my time in Morocco, I had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the identity of Moroccan women. A  perspective very different from my own. What struck me most was the complex and evolving role of women in Moroccan society as they navigate the balance between tradition and modern change. Moroccan women live in a society deeply rooted in Islamic traditions, yet one that is also undergoing significant transformation. According to the World Bank, Morocco has made substantial progress in gender equality, particularly in education and legal rights. Throughout the trip, several people mentioned that women now have more legal protections, especially in the area of divorce. In most of the places we visited, it was predominantly women who were hard at work—doing the tedious jobs like cleaning and sorting out bad fruit—while men handled tasks involving heavy equipment.
