Blog 2: Ability or Social Status

As a person with a chronic illness, I was curious to know what the general experience is of those with noncommunicable illnesses in Morocco. I found that, as of the World Health Organization’s findings in 2025, almost 85 percent of all deaths in Morocco are attributed to noncommunicable diseases. 73 percent of all spending on long-term illnesses goes to four main conditions: hypertension, end-stage kidney disease, cancer, and diabetes, and resources remain limited with only 1.5 healthcare workers for every thousand people (WHO, 2025)

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has initiated several programs to build more healthcare infrastructure, including the National Multisectoral Strategy for the Prevention and Control of NCDs, beginning in 2019. This strategy includes the constructions of healthcare facilities around the country, such as oncology centers and reproductive health clinics, and increased screening for noncommunicable illnesses. The Health Reform Strategy, additionally, is aiming towards universal health coverage and prevention of risk-increasing factors like smoking and poor diet (WHO, 2025)

  1. I thought your post was really interesting, especially the fact that almost 85% of deaths in Morocco are caused by noncommunicable diseases. I didn’t realize the rate was that high, and it surprised me how much of a burden conditions like diabetes, cancer, and hypertension are on the healthcare system. I also found it important that Morocco is actively trying to address this through programs like the National Multisectoral Strategy and expanding healthcare facilities. Something else I learned is that cardiovascular diseases make up a large portion of NCD-related deaths in Morocco, which shows how important prevention and lifestyle changes are in addition to treatment (World Health Organization, 2025). It made me wonder how effective these new healthcare programs are in reaching people in rural areas, where access to hospitals and specialists might still be limited.
