One identity difference that stood out was gender roles and how they shape everyday life, leadership, and opportunities within society. As we traveled through cities, agricultural communities, and educational institutions, I’ve noticed that expectations for men and women can vary depending on location, age, religion, family traditions, and socioeconomic status. Observing these differences firsthand in Morocco has helped me better understand how gender roles influence culture and community dynamics in ways that are both subtle and visible.

Morocco has made significant progress in improving women's access to education and legal rights over the past few decades. More women are attending universities, entering professional careers, and participating in leadership roles more than ever before. However, gender inequality still exists in areas like political representation. Women continue to experience barriers that can limit economic independence and leadership opportunities, especially in rural communities where traditional expectations may still be strongly enforced.

A societal issue connected to gender roles in Morocco is the unequal access to opportunities, especially in agricultural settings. Although women do heavily contribute to agricultural labor (Editor, 2025), women often have less access to land ownership, financial resources, and education compared to men. This can affect long-term stability and social mobility for women and their families. However, we learned during our tours at co-ops or women led businesses' that women and their children can get educated through the co-op which I think is amazing support.

This experience went against some preconceived notions I didn't realize I had about gender and culture. I think I sometimes viewed gender equality through a western perspective; being in Morocco has helped me understand that cultural values, religion, familial expectations and traditions all shape how societies approach gender roles. I learned that it's important to avoid making quick judgments about other cultures without fully understanding the context and history behind those social norms.

Something that stood out to me was the increasing balance between tradition and modernization. Morocco is clearly developing and becoming more globally connected, yet the value for tradition and cultural expectations is still very strong. I found this really interesting because leadership values are often connected to cultural values. Some communities have leadership in a community centered way rather than individual achievement. Gender expectations can influence who is encouraged to lead, but I also saw examples of women gaining more visibility and influence in professional spaces.

Overall, learning about the gender roles here expanded my understanding of how identity shapes opportunities, relationships, and leadership within a society. This experience had me thinking about cultural differences while still recognizing shared challenges across different countries.
